Are you looking for simple yet effective ways to incorporate AI videos into your daily video creation workflows?

In the past, creating engaging videos required a steep learning curve, hours of effort, and often, expensive professional equipment.

Now, with the AI video generator market expected to be worth $1.76 billion by 2030, the possibilities are endless. Today, anyone with an idea and tools can generate stunning videos online effortlessly and affordably.

Understanding the urge to create compelling video content, many companies have stepped forward with AI-based solutions.

But which is the best one?

What’s the buzz about AI-powered videos?

The world of video content has taken a quantum leap thanks to the advent of AI video generators. These solutions use advanced algorithms to automate the video creation process, making it seamless and efficient.

The result? High-quality videos that look professionally made without breaking your budget or requiring any technical expertise.

But why exactly are AI-powered videos becoming so popular?

The reasons vary, but some of the key points would include:

Improved speed and efficiency

When using an AI video generator online, one may count on getting the job done in hours, if not minutes. This is because AI technology automates most of the processes – from finding and compiling relevant video clips to editing them into a cohesive story.

However, it’s not as simple as just pressing a button and having a ready-made video. The AI still requires human input, such as selecting the type of video, desired style, and adding personal touches.

Greater cost savings

Professional video production is an expensive affair that can put a strain on any business’s marketing budget. AI video generators offer a more affordable alternative without compromising on quality.

Wider accessibility

AI video generators are designed to be user-friendly and require little to no technical knowledge. This makes it possible for anyone to create engaging videos regardless of background or skill set.

What exactly is an AI video generator?

An AI video generator is a software platform that uses advanced algorithms to create videos automatically. By analyzing input such as text, images, or raw footage, it can generate a high-quality video with minimal human intervention.

These tools often provide features like automated editing, voiceover generation, and adding effects, making video production quick and accessible. You simply provide the content, and the AI takes care of the production part, coming up with professional-looking videos suitable for marketing, education, or entertainment purposes. Essentially, this technology democratizes video creation, allowing anyone to produce professional-grade videos without much editing skills.

Many steps go into the making of a film, and one such step is creating a shot list.

If you’re planning a new film or video project, the following guide will explain what a shot list is, why it’s important, and how you can create your own.

What is a Shot List?

A film is essentially a series of shots that provide information and tell a story. Without the necessary shots, a film might not convey the intended information.

A shot list is exactly what it sounds like – a list of all the shots you’ll need for a particular scene or on a particular day of filming. For every shot, you might include information about camera angles, framing, specific equipment needed, actors involved, dialogue, and other critical details.

A shot list doesn’t need to restrict your creativity as a filmmaker. On the contrary, it can allow you to operate more creatively. Knowing you’re capturing the essential shots, you might feel freer to experiment with other shots that could enhance the finished product. You’ll feel more at ease thinking creatively and brainstorming on the spot, ensuring nothing essential is missed during editing.

Common questions: What comes first: the shot list or the script?

Writing a script for a film or video project is another essential pre-production task. Although some filmmakers encourage improvisation, they typically start with a script. Improvisation usually builds on a script instead of creating one spontaneously.

It generally makes sense to write a script before creating a shot list. A shot list reminds you of the necessary shots to ensure the edited footage tells a coherent story. To determine which shots are necessary, you first need to know the story an individual scene is telling. A script provides that information.

Why is a Shot List Important?

A shot list is vital because if certain critical shots are missing from the final edit, the finished product might confuse viewers. Assuming you can determine what shots you need on the day of filming is a mistake. Video production can become costly if any time is wasted. With a pre-prepared shot list, you’ll operate more efficiently during filming, saving money in the long run.

Drafting a shot list beforehand also helps identify if you need specific equipment or settings. Instead of last-minute scrambling, you can prepare by reviewing a detailed shot list, ensuring you have everything before starting production.

How to Make a Shot List

There’s no singular way to create a shot list. If you’re new to this, consider a standard process involving these steps:

Choose a Shot List Template

If you’re unfamiliar with shot list layouts, there are many online templates available. Research your options and select one that suits your needs.

(Bonus tip: If you’re new to video production, consider a video maker tool that offers video templates, boosting efficiency and potentially saving money as a result.)

Annotate Your Script

There are several reasons to script your video first before creating a shot list. Specifically, professionals often begin creating shot lists by annotating their scripts.

Review a scene’s script and jot down shot ideas in the margins. Collaborate with your cinematographer if you’re working with one to brainstorm shooting strategies.

Finalize Your Shot List

After deciding on the shots, list them in numbered sequence. The template you chose might format this automatically. Note that each entry should include details about on-screen appearances and descriptions, aiding in pre-production preparations.

Creating a Shot List: A Simple Way to Save Time and Money

Pre-production is as crucial as the actual production when crafting a solid film. By dedicating time to a detailed shot list, you can ensure a smoother and more successful filming experience for everyone involved.

Powtoon’s Video Maker Simplifies Video Production

Utilizing a robust video maker, designed for both amateurs and professionals, further simplifies video production during the editing stages. If you have limited video production experience, such tools make the process more accessible and cost-effective.

Video content can serve a wide range of purposes in the digital age. If you’re a business owner or marketer, video content can help you engage potential customers more effectively than other types of content might. If you are an educator, video content can help you explain complex ideas and concepts in ways that students will understand. In addition, internal company videos can be used for everything from onboarding new hires to training current employees.

Video content is effective for several reasons. One is the simple fact that video content is dynamic enough to capture the attention of audience members.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that most people these days are exposed to plenty of distractions. Research shows that the average attention span is now as short as eight seconds.

Account for this when producing and finalizing a video project. While you want to be confident that your video provides all the necessary information for your audience, you may also want to trim video fluff to ensure your video is as concise as possible.

Powtoon’s video maker can help in this capacity. Powtoon offers a video maker that simplifies the process of creating all sorts of video content for those who have limited video production experience. It also includes a user-friendly video trimmer tool. The following guide explains how to use it when putting the finishing touches on one of your projects.

Trim Video Online With Powtoon’s Video Maker: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Access Your Account

Begin by logging into your account via Powtoon.com. If you haven’t already done so, you can sign up for free to create an account.

Step 2: Upload Your Video

Upload your video content to your Powtoon account. If you already have, you can skip to selecting the video project you want to work on.

Step 3: Edit

If this is a new video project that you haven’t edited yet, before you trim it, you might want to make use of Powtoon’s other editing features first. Powtoon’s video maker allows you to add such elements as the following to your video:

  • Icons
  • Animation
  • Music
  • Fonts
  • Colors
  • Original characters
  • Graphics

Consider your goals when editing a video with Powtoon’s video maker. For example, maybe you’re working on a piece of marketing content. If so, during the editing process, you might choose color schemes and typography that are brand appropriate.

Step 4: Use the Video Trimmer

The video trimmer is one of Powtoon’s many editing tools. With the video trimmer, you can easily select a section of your video you want to trim down. All it takes is a few clicks to remove the content you no longer need!

(Note: You may also use the video trimmer before adding additional features with the video maker. For instance, some filmmakers prefer to finalize the cut of their videos before adding music and other such elements. There’s no “right” choice. Do whatever you feel most comfortable with!)

Step 5: Download

After you trim your video, you can watch the finished product to confirm it meets your standards. Consider watching it with others whose opinions you value before deciding the project is complete. Once you’re happy with your creation, Powtoon’s video maker allows you to easily download it and share it on video hosting platforms of your choice.

(Bonus tip: Check out our guide on how to make a video file smaller to simplify the process of uploading a video.)

Trim Video Content Effectively: Tips to Keep in Mind

You need to strike a delicate balance when trimming video content. Again, your goal may be to cut out the fluff, but you don’t want to remove any valuable content or trim your video in such a way that the final edit is awkward. When choosing where to trim your video, consider the following tips:

  • Look for portions of your video where no one is moving or saying anything, as these extra seconds might be best for trimming.
  • Focus on making the first few seconds of your video as engaging as possible, cutting out any unnecessary content that might not help you capture the attention of audience members.
  • Your video might end on a call to action. If so, trim any extra content around the ending that might prevent the call to action from serving its intended purpose.
  • Are there any portions of your video that make the same points more than once? Trim accordingly if so. However, if a topic is particularly complex, making the same points multiple times to ensure your audience understands the topic could be necessary.
  • Consider your audience. A quick video for social media may require more trims than a business video you’ll be presenting to fellow team members.

Music and sound effects can play very important roles in a piece of video content. Music can set the tone for a video, helping you trigger the intended emotional reaction in your audience. In addition, by establishing a tone with certain music choices, you can further establish your brand.

Sound effects are also important. Sometimes, sound effects merely serve a practical purpose, literally conveying something that is happening on screen. Sound effects can also emphasize important points, trigger laughs when used strategically, and much more.

Luckily, with the right video maker tool, adding music and sound effects to a video project is easy. Powtoon’s video maker offers users access to a large music library consisting of free stock music they can add to enhance their videos. With Powtoon, you can also easily add your own music and sound effects files. Keep reading to learn more:

Using Powtoon’s Video Maker to Add Stock Music and Sound Effects to a Video: What You Need to Know

Step 1: Select Your Music

Start by opening your chosen project and uploading your own audio files or choosing a file from Powtoon’s music library. Be aware, you’ll need a Pro+ or Agency plan to add music or sound effects to a project’s timeline.

In Create mode, you can navigate to the Sound tab and choose the specific soundtrack you want to add by choosing one of the following options:

  • My Music
  • My Voiceovers
  • Premium Sounds
  • Free Sounds

Once you’ve chosen your library, you can begin searching for stock music or sound effects. If you’re choosing from your own files, give them easy-to-remember names when uploading them to simplify the search process later.

(Tip: You can search for music files and sound effects by specifying the type of mood you have in mind, such as “romantic.”)

Step 2: Preview and Use

You may preview a soundtrack file by clicking the Play button/icon next to its name. When you decide you’re happy with a selection, click the Use button to the right to add it to your project.

Step 3: Add the File

When you decide to use an audio file, Powtoon’s video maker will prompt you to choose whether you want to add the file to the entire project or simply to the current slide you’re working on. Make your choice accordingly, and use Powtoon’s edit tools to ensure the audio plays where and when you want it to play in your video.

Uploading Your Own Audio Files to Powtoon: Essential Information

If you choose to incorporate your own music and audio files instead of choosing from Powtoon’s music library, you’ll need to upload these files first before proceeding to the steps above. Follow these steps to do so:

  • Navigate to the Sound tab in Create mode
  • Select Add Music
  • Click Upload to upload a file from your computer, a social media icon to upload a file from Dropbox or Google Drive, or Fiverr to be redirected to the Fiverr website, where you may hire someone to create music or sound effects for your project.

Once you’ve uploaded the file, you can access it via My Personal Library.

Tips for Adding Stock Music and Sound Effects to a Video

Music and sound effects have the potential to improve upon a video project when you take the time to choose the right music and sound effects for your purposes. Tips to keep in mind when deciding what types of music and other such audio files to add to a video include the following:

  • Choose audio that will convey the tone or mood you wish for your video to convey
  • Consider who your target audience is and what types of music they might respond to
  • Always ensure that your music and general audio choices align with your brand
  • Strive for balance so that you don’t overwhelm your audience with too much music or audio content

You may even consider choosing music before filming or animating your video content. Doing so allows you to match the rhythm and pacing more easily.

As always, it’s best to experiment. The more you experiment, the more you’ll learn how to match music with video properly.

Animation has become a central part of our culture, from creating some of the most loved and adored movies of all time to being used in marketing strategies all the way to creating adverts for customers to connect with. The beauty of animated videos is that it is only limited by the creator’s ideas, as it is an infinitely versatile way of engaging viewers and communicating with an audience.

Whilst animation is often thought of as a fairly recent creation, it has actually been around for over one hundred years. It has taken on many different forms and styles since its inception, from hand-drawn, 2D animation to 3D, computer-generated animation that is fluid and seamless. With some forms gaining more popularity than others, they have been used to create emotional storytelling, informative, animated videos, and everything in between.

We’re going to take a look at some of the most popular forms of animations out there today to help you learn the must-know styles for your next project.

2D animation

2D animation is one of the older and most traditional animation styles. It’s a straightforward style in theory, which involves animation makers hand-drawing two-dimensional images. It is called 2D because it involves animating objects on a two-dimensional plane, such as a flat piece of paper or computer screen, rather than in a three-dimensional space.

When this style was first developed, it involved artists drawing each frame by hand. This style excels in storytelling, and it is what was originally used to create the first Disney movies. Now, animation makers instead use digital software to create 2D animated videos at half of the time it would otherwise take. This allows for more precision, giving creators more time and control over each individual frame.

3D animation

What separates 3D animation and 2D animation is one idea: depth. By adding depth, animators are able to create worlds that appear alive and characters that feel more real. It allows people to connect and relate more with what they are viewing. 3D animation is also referred to as CGI (computer-generated image), as this style of animation requires a computer to create this animation style. With Powtoon’s Character Builder tool, animators can bring their ideas to life with 3 dimensional, customized characters to suit their needs.

The first 3D animation was released in 1976, and it was revolutionary at the time, completely

changing the way creators viewed animation and what we were capable of. It replaced 2D animation due to the ability to create much bigger worlds and widened the scope of creation enormously. Since then, it has become the most popular style by a large margin, with almost all animated movies and tv shows being made with this animation technique. Many brands began using 3D animation due to the effectiveness of video marketing in today’s world, with many popular adverts and videos being made in this style.

Stop motion

Stop motion is one of the original animation techniques, dating all the way back to the 1800s. This technique involves capturing individual frames with models and props and moving them slightly between frames. When all of the still frames are played in a sequence, it helps to create the illusion of motion. Models with moveable joints are often used as they help to create a better sense of fluidity and make it more life-like.

This type of animation dates back to the 1800s, as it allowed people to create the illusion of movement despite not having the technology at the time. The first piece of film using stop motion to animate it was The Humpty Dumpty Circus, released in 1989. Stop motion animation grew in popularity in the 1900s, and it wasn’t until 1925 that the first feature-length movie using this technique was released called The Lost World. The same filmmaker then went on to make 1933’s King Kong which is still very famous to this day, and used stop animation to create the famous monster.

Motion Graphics

Whereas a lot of animated pieces of work are centered around a character and a setting, motion graphics deal with the animation of shapes, text, and graphics to convey the story visually. The animation style often revolves around simplicity, but because of this, it is also essential for animators to be very creative and detailed in order to get across the desired. With no characters or a setting to tell the story or create a feeling, you have to think of unique ways to achieve this in other ways. Objects, texts or shapes that would otherwise be static and not be the central focus of the piece of animation now become the main storytelling device(s).

Motion graphics is particularly useful when it comes to an informative or information-based animated video as the simple animation can help to engage the audience. They often have a narrator, and this helps to make it a lot easier and more interesting to digest more complex ideas.

Claymation

Claymation is essentially the same style as stop motion animation, but due to its popularity, it’s become a technique and style unto itself. Similarly to stop motion, this animation technique uses models made out of clay to create characters that are shot in small, incremental changes to create the illusion of movement. Unlike other types of animation on this list, claymation is very cheap and cost-effective as it does not require complex digital work. However, like stop motion, claymation is also very time-consuming as it requires a lot of attention and focuses on creating a smooth feel between frames.

Despite being a form of traditional animation, it is still very popular today despite the advances in digital animation. Whilst this style can be created digitally, animation makers still prefer it to be done by hand as it offers a truly unique feel, look, and atmosphere that other styles of animation simply do not create. It is not as refined and perfect as other types of animation, and this is precisely what gives it its charm. It’s because of this that many children’s movies are animated using claymation, including popular films such as Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit.

Flipbook Animation

Flipbooks are about as primitive as animation gets; however, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Flipbook animation requires only a pencil and a flipbook to create unique and inspiring animation. This animation style feels incredibly human and personal, and it is visually exciting for people of all ages. There is something wholly unique about seeing a drawing come to life on a small book right in front of your eyes. It is similar to stop-motion animation in that it involves ever-so-slight movements. Today, it is possible to digitally create flipbooks in an animated video format which manages to capture the essence of flipbook animation whilst being able to

Mechanical animation

Mechanical animation is a type of 3D animation that is specifically made to show how a mechanical device works and operates. These animations will often deconstruct a mechanical device, visually removing the out layers and diving deep into the inner workings. Mechanical animations are also commonly made as explainer videos for how something is made and works.

These animations are capable of creating exciting and engaging explainer videos. They are often paired with voiceovers which helps to turn a complex diagram into an immersive explainer video. This also makes these types of animation great for promotional purposes. For example, a company may create a mechanical animation to show how their new and improved car engine works, detailing the changes they’ve made internally from previous models.

Whiteboard Animation

Whiteboard animation is a type of animation commonly used for explainer videos. This animation style was original of an artist hand-drawing on a whiteboard which often involves a doodling style. However, now this same effect can now be achieved digitally too. Animation makers are drawn to this style because of its simplicity yet effectiveness. It can become somewhat of a timeless animation style, with animators constantly coming back to this style due to its ability to inform and storytelling so well.

Live-action animation

Live-action animation is a unique animation style that blends live-action footage with animation elements to create a visually stunning effect. This animation style is often used in commercials, music videos, and feature films. Live-action animation allows filmmakers to combine the real world with fantastical elements, creating a seamless blend that captures the viewer’s imagination.

One of the key benefits of live-action animation is that it offers a level of creative freedom that is difficult to achieve with other animation styles. By combining live-action footage with animation, creators can add a layer of depth and complexity to their work that wouldn’t be possible with just one or the other. Additionally, live-action animation can be a cost-effective way to achieve a high-quality look without needing to build elaborate sets or create entirely computer-generated environments.

Animation may have existed for quite some time now, but thanks to tools like Powtoon’s animation maker, it’s now easier than ever for both individuals and organizations to animate their own video content, even if they have next to no experience doing so.

This may be why animation is playing an increasingly significant role in education, video marketing, internal communications, and more. In fact, the market for animated video production may double in size in the next few years.

Perhaps you’re a business owner with an idea for a piece of video content that could benefit from the dynamic visual qualities of animation. Or, maybe you’re an educator who believes animated lessons could help you capture (and keep!) the attention of your students.

No matter what your reason may be for creating animated content, along with using the right online animation maker to ensure the finished product is high-quality, you should also write a script early. Doing so can help you save time (and, therefore, money!) later on during the actual production phase.

Not sure where to start when writing the screenplay for a short animated film? This guide will help.

How to Write an Animation Script

Don’t worry if you’ve never written a script for an animated video before. These tips and insights will simplify what might otherwise seem to be an intimidating process. You can also automate the process using one of the best AI script writer tools—Powtoon Imagine. In this case, it also helps to know what is AI script writing.

What is an Animation Script?

Before you learn how to write an animation script, you should first appreciate the basic purpose a script serves.

A good script should:

  • Describe the characters of your video, along with their actions
  • Include all lines of dialogue that you will need to record
  • Describe the settings your video will feature
  • Break up your general story into individual scenes

Understanding the Basics of Script Writing for Animated Videos

Taking the following steps will help you begin planning your script with confidence, regardless of whether you’re a seasoned scriptwriter or a newbie:

  • Define your target audience and the purpose of your video. This will help you determine its overall tone and length. For example, if you’re creating an animated video to upload to social media and share with a young audience, you might aim to create a relatively short video with a fun or casual vibe. On the other hand, if your viewer is likely to be a client, you want to ensure your video conveys a more professional tone.
  • Research competitor videos similar to the ones you plan to produce. Make notes regarding what your competitors are doing right, as well as what they may be doing wrong.
  • Read a few examples of screenplays to learn the basics of the format.
  • Create an outline. To do so, list the main points your video will need to make, then brainstorm scene ideas that will allow your video to make these points as concisely as possible. This will also help you determine what types of characters may appear in your video and who the main character will be. Once you believe you have an idea of the types of scenes your video should include, make an outline in which you list the scenes in their intended order, along with a description of each scene’s basic elements (such as characters, setting, etc.)

Writing an Engaging Script for Animated Videos

Again, the key elements of the script for an animation video include the following:

  • Scenes
  • Descriptions of settings
  • Descriptions of actions
  • Characters
  • Dialogue

When writing the first draft of your script, your goal should mainly be to ensure all these basic elements are in place. Once you’ve written a draft, review it to determine whether any scenes can be edited down or cut completely to reduce the length of the video. You may also find you need to add scenes if your current draft of the script fails to hit all the main points.

You can rewrite a second draft of your script once you’ve completed the first one. The purpose of this rewrite is to make sure your finished animated movie engages an audience. To achieve this goal when writing your second draft, you may:

  • Incorporate humor (if doing so is right for the tone of your video).
  • Add an element of suspense.
  • Use storytelling techniques to forge an emotional connection with viewers.
  • In moments when characters may be describing complex ideas, consider adding examples to illustrate key points.

Polishing the Animated Video Script

You may need to write one final draft of your script before you’re ready to rev up the animation maker and move into the production phase. When writing your last draft, you should:

  • Carefully proofread the script for errors that could confuse an actor when recording dialogue, confuse a director when animating the video, etc.
  • Cut unnecessary words, vary sentence length/structure, and use more impactful verbs to make the script more powerful.
  • Include a call-to-action that encourages an audience member to take some sort of desired action (such as buying a product or signing up for a service) that corresponds with the purpose of the video.

Additionally, keep in mind that screenwriting is among the most difficult filmmaking skills to master. You should by no means abandon your plans if you still don’t feel you know how to write an animation script after applying the tips here to your first attempt. If you consistently practice, you will eventually develop the skills to write scripts that impress you and your audience.

Animation has a rich and fascinating history, stretching back more than a century to the early days of film. From the first hand-drawn animations to the latest computer-generated imagery (CGI), animation styles have evolved remarkably, from simple flickering images to a significant cultural force in entertainment and beyond.

Over the years, animation has entertained audiences and pushed the boundaries of storytelling and visual expression. It has given us some of the most iconic characters in popular culture, from Mickey Mouse to Homer Simpson, and has paved the way for groundbreaking techniques in film and television.

But animation is not just a product of the entertainment industry; it has also found its way into education, advertising campaigns, and more. From instructional videos to cartoons, animated visuals have proven to communicate complex and entertaining ideas effectively.

In this blog, we will delve into animation’s fascinating history and evolution, exploring the techniques, technologies, and pioneers who have shaped the art form into what it is today.

Early Animation Techniques

The advent of photography and film in the late 19th and early 20th centuries revolutionized the field of animation by providing new tools and techniques for creating and capturing motion. Two of the most significant animation techniques that emerged during this time were stop-motion animation and cel animation.

Stop-motion animation involves creating a series of still images, with minor changes made between each one, and then playing them back in sequence to create the illusion of motion. The technique was made possible by the invention of the camera, which allowed animators to capture and reproduce images faster and more accurately than ever before. Stop-motion animation was used extensively in early animated films, such as J. Stuart Blackton’s 1900 film “The Enchanted Drawing.”

Just six years later, James Stuart Blackton released his 1906 film ‘Humorous Phases of Funny Faces,’ regarded by many as the first animated film. This film is around 3 minutes long and features the artist’s hand only at the beginning as he draws the character.

After this, Blackton used stop-motion animation to provide the illusion that the image is moving independently. These animation techniques created a whirlwind of inspiration and creativity, with many films beginning to utilize animation. It was new and exciting and offered creators a new form of expression. In 1908, Émile Cohl released Fantasmagorie, regarded as one of the first-ever cartoons.

Cel animation, also known as traditional animation, involves drawing each frame of an animated sequence by hand and photographing them sequentially to create the illusion of motion. This technique was made possible by the invention of celluloid sheets, which could be quickly drawn and photographed. Cel animation became the dominant form of animation in the early 20th century and was used extensively in film.

The Golden Age of Animation

It wasn’t long before the golden age of animation began, between the 1930s-1960s. This period was named the golden age of animation as it saw the rise of sound, color, and multiplane cameras being used alongside it.

It is believed that the golden age began in 1928 with a short animation called Steamboat Willie. This is because it was the first time that sound was synchronized with the animation, resulting in a more immersive experience. This legendary moment in amination was created by none other than Walt Disney.

Walt Disney is crowned as the one who pioneered cartoons and animation throughout the golden age, with Disney still having an enormous impact on contemporary culture. Disney is responsible for creating famous cartoons and cartoon characters, including Mickey Mouse.

While much of the credit is often given to Disney, he was not without help. His long-term friend and companion, Ub Iwerks, had a significant influence on his creations, as he was the one who provided Disney with the original drawings for characters such as Mickey Mouse.

In 1937, Disney released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, marking a legendary animation moment. This film was the first feature-length, hand-drawn animated film, and it paved the way for the future of animation. It ultimately pushed the boundaries of what was believed to be possible, showcasing levels of detail and expression never seen before. It was made to such a high standard that even today, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is cemented within pop culture and remains one of Disney’s most famous and popular movies.

Disney was also responsible for creating the multiplane camera in 1937, which completely changed the game for animation once again, as it offered a new sense of depth and realism to animation.

Following this, Disney released many other immensely popular animated cartoons, including Pinocchio in 1940, Dumbo in 194, and Bambi in 1942. This style continued to reign supreme for many years, below slowly starting to fade out of popularity in the late 60s, allowing new technology to change everything again.

Modern Animation Techniques and Trends

As the golden age ended, we began to see many techniques and trends emerge that made up what we know as modern animation. This rapid change was primarily due to the rise in popularity of television, with an estimated 92% of American homes owning a TV by 1964

Pre-1960, animations were solely hand-drawn. However, early computers gave animation makers an entirely different way to create, once again revolutionizing the industry. Hummingbird was the first computer-generated animation, made in 1967. Animators used 30,000 images to create the piece, and although it seems essential now, it changed how animation was done.

Many people began to enjoy watching cartoons in the comfort of their homes. This meant that studios had to adapt and start creating animated cartoons for TV, and by the mid-1980s, cartoons were everywhere.

Thanks to technological advances, animation was able to be created quickly, with more detail and longer films to be made too. From the 1980s to now, many animated feature films have been created using CGI. This stands for computer-generated image, and it involves designing 3D models of characters or settings entirely from a laptop rather than hand-drawing.

The Graphics Group was the brains behind creating one of the first 3D animated movies, Adventures of André & Wally B. However, this company eventually turned into what we now know as Pixar. In 1995, Pixar released the legendary Toy Story, their first entirely CGI animated film. The 3D computer allowed animation makers to create feature-length animated films with more depth, color, expression, and personality than ever before.

Brands also began creating animated videos to help market their products or services. Animated videos can be an excellent way to tell a brand story, engaging audiences and connecting with them on a more emotional level.

Animated videos can also be used for educational purposes or explainer videos. For example, a brand may want to use an animated presentation to demonstrate how their new product differs from a previous product. This is seen a lot in mechanical animation, where a company will show the inner workings of their new device or product to demonstrate the improvements.

The Future of Animation

Despite all of the incredible advancements in animation so far, it’s still getting better with every passing year. Animation makers are always looking to harness the latest technology to see how they can use it, and emerging technologies such as Virtual Reality are likely to impact animation significantly.

Animation is no longer bound to just film and tv; it is used in various mediums, such as video games, marketing, education, and much more.

Virtual reality expands these horizons more than ever, providing animators with a new way to animate things. VR is very interactive, intending to immerse the user into a new world entirely. Therefore, animation has taken on a new form as it is made to be more life-like than ever.

Animators can use previous styles and techniques such as whiteboard animation, mixing virtual reality with live-action animation, and even interactive animation to bring an entirely new type of experience and form of animation.

Hyperrealistic animation is also becoming increasingly popular, with shows such as Love, Death & Robots as excellent example of tv shows that creates incredibly realistic-looking animations.

In the past, animation was centered around creating unique, absurd, and visually fascinating cartoons. However, due to technological advances, many animators attempt to create hyperrealistic animations to tell their stories.

Conclusion

Animation has changed immensely over the last century, from relatively humble beginnings to a complex, highly-detailed art form. While the original animation techniques of energy are from loss, technological developments over time simplified certain aspects, allowing animation makers to expand the possibilities and ideas and flex their creativity to new heights.

Walt Disney pioneered animation and played a massive role in what many people refer to now as the golden age of animation. The path was many pages, and Disney’s work remains strong today. As individuals began to explore this innovative medium’s potential, computer animation’s capabilities continued to advance and expand, ultimately giving rise to the stunning CGI masterpieces that currently dominate our media landscape. Seeing where animation takes us next is exciting, with technological advances coming faster every year.

Video content is playing an increasingly important role in the marketing campaigns and internal communications of businesses across a range of industries. In fact, a recent survey indicates that approximately 96% of all marketers consider video to be a significant component of their overall strategies.

It’s also worth noting that businesses appear to be growing more and more aware of the value that animation, in particular, can deliver. Some industry professionals even believe the production of animated marketing videos will double in the coming years.

No matter what your niche may be, if you haven’t already done so, you should consider how you may leverage animation videos to achieve your business goals. This overview will cover just some of the main reasons you may wish to create more animated content in 2023 and onward.

(Tip: You can still generate animated content even if you lack experience as an animator. With Powtoon’s animation maker, creating attention-grabbing video animation is easy and affordable.

Why Do Businesses Use Animation?

There are many reasons businesses like yours benefit from using animation in their video marketing and internal communications strategies. Noteworthy examples include the following:

  • An animated character can serve as a visual representation of a brand
  • Motion graphics can illustrate complex ideas in an easy-to-understand way, helping companies market their services and products more easily
  • Research indicates animated content may boost conversion rates by as much as 80%
  • Animation is good for SEO because it can capture the attention of an audience, causing website visitors to stay longer
  • With the right easy-to-use animation tool, creating animated videos may be easier and more cost-effective than filming live-action videos

Those are just a few examples. The specific ways in which animation will benefit your content marketing and internal comms strategies will vary depending on your goals, the exact nature of your business, and other such factors.

Types of Animated Videos for Businesses

Animated videos can serve many purposes and come in many forms. The following are just a few examples of the types of animated videos your business may offer viewers:

  • Explainer videos
  • Videos that give dynamic life to other types of content, such as infographics or blog posts
  • Onboarding and training videos
  • Animated ads
  • Animated GIFs

Essentially, if a video can be filmed in live-action, odds are it can also be animated.

(With, of course, the obvious exception of an actual live video! Even the strongest animation maker can’t help you create live content in real time!)

Tips for Creating an Effective Animated Video

When planning and creating your animated video content, keep the following suggestions in mind. They will help you create and upload videos that make the right impression on your audience:

  • Use an all-in-one animation software that offers templates and other such features to help you animate a professional-looking video, even if your experience is minimal
  • Choose a color scheme that represents your brand
  • Before producing a video, consider the specific role it will play in your marketing strategy or internal comms
  • Write a script
  • Create a thorough storyboard for your video
  • Decide whether your video will feature 2D animation or 3D animation
  • Determine the length of your video by deciding where you will share it (for example, a social media video for TikTok should typically be less than half a minute, while a video for LinkedIn, YouTube, or a similar platform may be longer)
  • Develop an overall tone and “vibe” for your video based on your audience

It’s also important to avoid making certain mistakes when you animate videos. Errors to guard against include the following:

  • Recording audio without the right equipment or in the wrong setting
  • Not recording multiple takes of audio
  • Rushing into production without a plan for how you will market your video to your consumer base (or other relevant audience, such as your employees)

Additionally, you may want to create multiple versions of the same animated video for different platforms. For example, perhaps you could create a short version of an explainer video to post on social media, directing viewers to a longer and more thorough version on your website.

All that said, if you’re still wondering, “Why do businesses use animation?” consider the fact that you will learn more about the value of animated content when you begin creating and releasing your own. As you experiment with animation, you will become increasingly aware of the unique benefits it can offer.
