Rod needed to fill his new training course with paying, registered students… and started with ZERO!
He realized his message just wasn’t compelling and needed something awesome.
So he ran a “Powtoon Ads” campaign that FILLED his training course fast. Take a look at Rod’s case (and keep reading to see one of RPM Academy’s Powtoons!)
My name is Rob Morgan and I’ve worked in the corporate training space for 25 years. Now I work in RPM Academy. Most of that business is really focused on the quality management systems (like ISO, Lean, Six Sigma) and then enabling methods which would be around project management, change management and facilitation.
It’s all about organizations developing improvement strategies and quality enhancement strategies. Traditionally, this has been a corporate approach to sell into those corporations.
Traditionally, that training was done in class and people took training courses for 3-5 days at a time. There you almost ?drown them? in all the tools and methods, then to align them with the projects they’re working on.
It’s like Drivers’ Ed. First you learn the material in class, and then you go out and drive the vehicle. In this case, the “vehicles” are the projects of these corporate managers and executives.
We also provide certification. That is the traditional model.
Where we change gears is where we offer courses, but not through the traditional corporate channels. We no longer market to large corporations but to individuals.
Now, we’re concerned how to drive traffic through all of the noise and clutter that’s out there for people to look at our programs.
The new programs leverage what Powtoon is all about. We’re a very connected world out there, and with the technologies we have available, we can offer courses to anyone, anywhere. A student can log in when a trainer is appearing live to teach at a specified time for a specific topic.
As opposed to being in class for 5 days in a row. The pace is much easier and the learning experience is much better.
The challenge is how do we get individuals who are normally attracted from within a corporation to independently see the benefit of this course for their work and life.
The only way to do that is through social media, which was very new to us. So we set up our social media channels on LinkedIn and Facebook — which was the first step. Then we needed the funding to pay for the advertising, which can be very expensive.
So now, we’re looking for conversion rates. We found that the traditional messaging we were using wasn’t compelling enough.
Then, we stumbled across Powtoon and started experimenting with the tools.
What we really liked about Powtoon was, not only did it provide these innovative tools for creating these messages, but also there was a lot of great advice provided how to deliver the right message over the right period of time.
That 30-second window, for instance, when you’re looking to capture the attention of the viewer before they move on to the next thing. That bite size piece of information that is a hook that pulls them in.
Then leveraging a broader, more lengthy Powtoon to explain what our proposition is, and why it’s beneficial to the student.
From that, we were able to derive a lot of success. We saw a marked change in our response rate. Traffic to our site was going up, and we were selling into new spaces we were never able to reach before.
This was undiscovered country for us. Powtoon was intertwined with our marketing from day 1 in this new venture. What we have seen is that the response rate in our ads through our Powtoon campaigns in various channels — from Facebook Ads to Google Adwords and other channels — we quickly filled our first classes.
Whereas months prior to using Powtoon we had ZERO registration. We couldn’t solicit the interest. But the moment we launched these Powtoon Ads, using the advice Powtoon offered, we immediately saw traction.
So we’re just finishing our first wave of “Lean Six Sigma Blackbelt” course. It’s 42 sessions that are 2 hours in duration that students attend from 7-9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The commitment to the student is that it’s a night class. The benefit is that they can take it from the comfort of their home. You’re attending virtually, you interact with other students, there are breakout sessions where students become moderators.
We saw the change the minute we put a Powtoon on our page. We usually have to market our corporate programs 4-6 months in advance of our class date. What we could see on our website is that our drop-rate was reduced significantly and more people were spending more time on our site as soon as we put the Powtoon up.
Prior to doing the Powtoon videos, we were stuck with “Mass Email,” with traditional marketing channels. We were getting ZERO response rate from our new market.
Our vehicle for getting the conversion rate to where we needed it was with our Powtoons. It’s the primary thing for us now.
It’s actually remarkable. Because this program was brand new – and using Powtoon we increased our click-throughs and registrations.
We also do analytics on our Powtoons. We see how long people watch the Powtoon. So if people drop off, we analyze how to modify it so people watch for longer without sacrificing the message. We see exactly what’s working, and optimize through analytics.
That’s not something you can do with old models of marketing.
What I appreciate about the Powtoon platform is the training you give us in your Powtoon webinars.
Powtoon will be our main driver because it’s so darn compelling. Powtoon is giving us the traction we need to fill our virtual classrooms.
We live in a society today that attention-spans are just not there. They’re absorbing so much at once, it’s impossible to digest all the noise that’s coming in.
Unless you can get your message to that one, bite-sized, compelling 3-4 sentences that lock people in, you lose them very quickly.

]]>Hey, Ari from Powtoon here with an inspiring new case study with our friends from the University of Wisconsin how to EDU-TAIN with video.
You’re going to love their story, led by Karla Farrell*. This is how a short, “first draft” Powtoon quickly made it into the hands of the CHANCELLOR because it was shared so much… in a matter of hours. Maybe you have seen a situation like this in your organization: a new software being used that not enough people were using, like at the University of Wisconsin.
So Karla decided to make a Powtoon to get more people using it by EDU-TAINING them WHY they should… and it worked!
Now, Powtoons are being used in tens of different ways to educate, engage, and entertain teams across the board. Introducing our good friend Karla Farrell, I’ll let her take it from here:

My name is Karla Farrell, I work for the University of Wisconsin Colleges & Extension as an Instructional Technologist.
I also have a volunteer role within the University of Wisconsin learning technology development counsel. I am the chairperson for a virtual conference, so I’ve used Powtoon to help promote the conference too.
When I first started in my role, we had just signed a system-wide contract for a new video-conferencing software. So I did a whole training session for Extension on how to use it. At the end of the training, someone asked WHY we should use it. I showed them HOW to use it, but I didn?t explain WHY they should even use it.
Then I decided to make a Powtoon to explain the benefits of WHY our staff should use our new software. So I quickly made a rough draft Powtoon and sent it to my boss. By the time I got back to work just the next day, my boss had forwarded the Powtoon to his boss who forwarded it to the Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin.
The Chancellor LOVED it.
Since then, after just 30 seconds of experience – I became the “Powtoon Pro.” I’ve since used Powtoon to create a number of explainer videos to inspire more people to use what we need them to use.
We also had a Course Evaluation Software that had a lot of “dos and don’ts” how to use it. So we did a quick Powtoon to show them WHY and HOW to use it. I chose to use Powtoon because it’s just so much fun to play with, that I look for excuses to use it. People LOVE the visuals of it.
Sure, I could create a PDF or regular video. But when I create a Powtoon, people watch it.
After the Powtoon, Course Evaluations went much smoother. They took note of what they learned and now made sure to do it. It was important because they needed to do certain actions that now they did. For example, they now made sure that every page of every survey had 4 cornerstones. They made sure that their barcodes were sharp.
They actually watched and listened.
For the Virtual Conference, I was recruiting people to submit proposals. So I did a quick Powtoon to inspire people with why they should present. People shared that on Facebook, they watched it. We saw more proposals that we would otherwise have seen.
Most people are visual learners, so when you send them an email – people don’t read it. They need it to be visually stimulating too. So when you send someone a Powtoon, they watch it. It keeps your attention in all the ways that a static document just can’t.
For me, it’s hard writing a serious business memo. I agonize over every word, then edit and re-edit. In the end, I’m not happy with the final result. With Powtoon, not only is it fun to make – but because it’s entertaining, people watch and pay attention to it.
As an aside, I love how you continue to improve the software. It feels that every time I log in, there’s something brand new, different and fun. I have to think about how I’m going to now use this.

Park Place Luxury Automobile Dealerships, Dallas Texas, With Kandi Gongora* – former Director of Organizational Excellence, Kari Mitchell – Web Administrator
We are responsible for Performance Improvement and ongoing process documentation as well as Training & Development. My role within that team is to develop E-Learning. With our training we want our members to be engaged, stay awake, to take something away from it.
In our research, adult education is not always easy. An adult needs something more to keep them engaged. We’re finding that with Millennials coming into the work force, Generation Z coming into the workforce, it’s difficult to hold their attention.
We just wanted to find a way to shorten the training and to make it POP, make it FUN and ENTERTAINING – and Powtoon does all of that for us.
We were able to make a module that actually explains what an Action Plan is, why it’s important, how to basically do it and showed the user the form they’ll be working with. We were able to do it in 6 and a half minutes. The feedback has been great.
We want to use this in the future as well, to shorten the training and take it out of the classroom and put it all online. We have all sorts of content we need Powtoon for.
For example – when a member (employee) is first hired at Park Place, they go through a week of orientation where they’ll be introduced to the organization, tours of our facilities, they’ll be trained on:
Whatever their role is, they’ll receive further drilled down training on their specific role whether it’s in sales, service or parts. They get a lot of in-person training that week. Beyond that, we also have a full leadership program.
We rolled our Powtoons out first to our General Managers before we rolled it out to the store level – and they found it very engaging and interesting – not the normal boring e-learning. It was very appealing, especially to the younger generation.
It felt like it was quick and to the point, it got the point across and was memorable. The members would remember it because it was so engaging. The VP of Human Resources, Sherry Miller loved our Powtoons so much, she asks us to animate EVERYTHING!
We also use another e-learning platform called Articulate, which is useful – but it’s not the same. It doesn’t have the life and the action that Powtoon is able to provide us. This VP of HR is now asking me to animate everything!

I had a great time creating our Powtoon, there was not a big learning curve at all. I was able to jump in and make something my first try.
The first Powtoon we did was about Career Conversation, which we call a Pit Stop. This is a quick 5 or 10 minute conversation a member would have with their manager. We wanted to explain that and why it’s important – so we made it into a Powtoon.
Overall, I found it very easy to work with. I learn something new every time I use Powtoon.
As someone who is in the Corporate world and does employee training in a corporate culture, we do find that videos are more engaging. But there are those out there who prefer to read.
So what I love about Powtoon is that it appeals to all learners and learning styles.
What sets Powtoon apart is that it appeals to every level. It’s a Triple Home Run, they’re really getting the MESSAGE from all 3 angles.
Everything is provided for you in Powtoon. The only advice I would give to people is to make sure you have your story ready – and then fine-tune your Powtoon until it makes you smile, gives you chill-bumps or until you’re really proud and want to share it with people.
Right now, for example, the Action Planning Powtoon IS our training module. We uploaded it to our training management system. That is THE training. Our other Powtoon Career Conversations we uploaded it within a larger training.
The next Powtoon we’re working on is on the current situation of the 4 Generations in the workplace simultaneously. Never before in history have so many generations worked together at once. So we’re building an entire training around the differences between the generations, what benefits them, how to communicate with them better.
We’re going to be doing a conference about this and showing Powtoons throughout. For example, we’ll have a Powtoon that illustrates the 4 different generations, the qualities that they possess, motivations and how to work with them. The Powtoons will be showing all of that.
A lot of our strategic leadership team are Baby Boomers. I’ll tell you that they’re among the ones who enjoyed the Powtoon more than anyone!
For the older generation, the Powtoon is fun and exciting. To be honest, they were really surprised that the Action Planning piece was as concise as it was. That in just a few minutes, the Powtoon fully explained what an action plan is, how to do the form and why it’s so important.
Our Baby Boomer leaders appreciated the Powtoon more than anyone did.
What was also important for us, especially for our younger group is that Powtoon is mobile. The fact that you can watch the Powtoon on your cell phone was a big deal – it made the training accessible.
Personally, as a corporate trainer I love training in person. I love it – but I have to be honest – it’s exhausting. I put my heart and soul into it. But, it?s worth it.
As people say, that nothing can replace in-person communication.
But, I have to say – I’ve found something that lets me be myself, that let’s my personality shine through in different ways as I illustrate different points. Powtoon gives me the means to express my personality as a trainer and to drill down specific points of content that I need the member to understand.
Now I can do it in a fun way that’s easily accessible. I’m really glad I found it. I’m always keeping my eyes open for new ways I can use Powtoon in our training.

Dr. Steve Leuck saw millions of patients suffering because of how their medications were prescribed to them. Without proper instructions, the patients all too often didn’t get any better, and sometimes they even got worse.
Dr. Steve had an idea that changed everything, and launched it with a short Powtoon. His video secured 15 national pharmacies as clients, and that wasn’t all it did…
Steve Leuck, Doctor of Pharmacy and medication therapy management specialist, just a few years ago, came up with an idea to offer consumer medication in audio format.
The concept is that every time a patient picks up a new prescription for medication, they receive counseling from their pharmacist. This counseling helps the patient understand what the medication is, and when and how often they’ll take it. This makes sure they get the best possible outcome of therapy.
However…
When patients leave the pharmacy, they’re handed a stack of papers, which are called “Consumer Medication Information” (CMI). There are a set amount of FDA guidelines and parameters that the CMI needs to fit, that are required to cover all the specific information.
When the patient gets home, they can look it read it over. Many times though, as valuable as it is — the CMI gets thrown away.
What AudibleRX does is present the same information in an audio format — specifically designed for those people who are challenged with literacy, visual impairment, and those who learn better by listening.
When they get home they can click and listen to the medical information, learn what they need to learn in a better way, and follow up with their pharmacist later with any questions they have.
It’s important to realize that this does not replace the face-to-face counseling they receive from their pharmacist. It’s just an alternative way to get follow-up information for the patient.
When they first started, Dr. Steve was doing a lot of blogging, and wanted to know the best way to get the message of AudibleRX out there.
Luka was the marketing intern who came to Dr. Steve with the idea that using Powtoon would be a great way to explain this concept — which is what they needed help with. Because “audible consumer medication information” is not something people understand.
Luka did the video and Dr. Steve did the script — and in just 60 seconds, Powtoon did the job of explaining how AudibleRX helps healthcare providers and patients.

“There are 67,000 pharmacies in the U.S. right now. Each time a prescription is filled in one of these pharmacies in one of these pharmacies, a piece of paper is printed out to hand out to the patient for his medical consumer information.
Our vision is that each time a prescription is filled, a link is sent to the patient’s phone where they just click to listen to the information.
That alone would save 90,000,000 sheets of paper a year. 4 billion prescriptions are filled each year, each one has two pieces of paper — that’s 8 billion pieces of paper, or 90,000 producing trees destroyed.
This will not only help people, it will help the environment.”
