Wow guys! When we asked you to nominate your teachers for our Powtoon Creativity Awards – we knew there were some AWESOME teachers out there, but we never imagined the amount of nominations and stories you?d be sending in. We went through THOUSANDS of nominations and struggled with picking the top 3 because they were all so amazing! So here are our top 3 winners who will be getting the Powtoon Classroom Elite from us, but keep reading as we want to give a shout out, and share the stories of a few more special teachers. Believe, me we wish you could all win but we are so happy to see how each and every one of you is inspiring your students and truly “igniting creativity”:

Drum roll please

Miss Yessica Betzabe Contreras Fuentes

Miss Yessica had over 20 students send in emails explaining why she is the most creative teacher alive! Here are some of their stories:

“I nominate Yessica Betzabe Contreras Fuentes. This teacher is creative because although we are studying codes and programming languages, she searches and uses activities, web sites and games to explain to us the basic rules for commands and system instructions, which otherwise will be boring and way more difficult to understand”

“I want to nominate my teacher: Yessica Contreras. This teacher is creative because she seeks new methods and ways of teaching the subjects of class, always tries something new when it comes to work and even weekly exams. An example is when we made a test with a Jenga, for me and the rest of the group it was the best game of Jenga we have ever. Intense but fun, I think is how I describe her classes, because we learn more about the topic we see. Also she teaches us how we can apply and develop our creativity in the field of work and in our social life, in some cases it gives us ideas for our work in other classes as well as hers.”

“Miss Yessica Contreras is the most amazing , and creative teacher that I ever had. Her soul is full of happiness. She knows everything about computers and she makes all the classes really fun and different that all the other teachers. She always think which activities are going to be the best for teaching us, and I love that because they are really creative, and because they are really interactive.”

Ms. Valerie DeTorres

Here is what one of Ms. DeTorres’s colleagues said about her complete awesomeness, and passion for igniting creativity in her classroom:

” She is transforming the way students learn every day! Valerie DeTorres, a biology teacher at North 13th Street Tech located in Newark, NJ should win this award. She teaches low income and special needs students how to become independent learners and creative problem solvers. She focuses around student-centered learning with the use of learning centers. She created a class Moodle page where students can watch Powtoon videos she creates, musics videos pertaining to the biology content, and other resources that all align to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core. As students enter her room, she quickly gives them a self-assessment which will identify the areas the students need to work on and then the students transition into a learning center geared towards their needs. While the students are working independently or in a small group, Ms. DeTorres walks around and offers one-on-one and small group instruction. She has improved student attitudes, confidence, and not to mention test scores. Through peer and student surveys, she has consistently been named the most innovative and engaging teacher in the district. Her passion and creativity comes through every day she is in the classroom and Valerie DeTorres deserves to be recognized for it. ??She is AWESOME! Ms. DeTorres class assignments are all project and inquiry based assignments, which promote creativity and ingenuity from her students. They are given a task and have to decide how to solve and present it to the class. Students have to hypothesize a solution, create an experiments to test it, collect and analyze data, and report their findings. Sure other teachers do labs throughout the year, but no teacher has ever turned their entire class into a lab, where students find solutions and dictate what the lab procedures will be. I, Salvatore Lima, am the 2015 Essex County Teacher of the Year, and I nominate Valerie DeTorres, because I know she is a phenomenal teacher and deserves this award more than anyone, including myself.”

Mrs. Michele Blackwell

Mrs. Blackwell received some of the most glowing recommendations we had the pleasure of reading, but we will post our favorite one here!

“Hello, whoever may be on the other end of this e-mail! Some member of the Powtoon team, I’m sure… Or perhaps a unicorn. Though aren’t they one and the same? I would love to take the time right now to thoroughly and properly nominate Mrs. Michele Blackwell of the Arizona Virtual Academy in your 2015 Powtoon CREATIVITY Awards, not only because of her inherent creativity as a teacher, but also because I’m just picturing all of the awesomeness and engagement she would yet create with a Classroom Elite Account. It may be too much for the state, the country, the world, the universe! ?Ahem?I’m not quite sure where I should begin in terms of Mrs. Blackwell’s creativity–for it seems to emanate from everything she presents as a teacher–though it is the reason for this correspondence and so I shall take no longer in showcasing it to the best of my abilities! To put it shortly – before the really, really, really long version of it, ahaha – Mrs. Blackwell flawlessly ‘ignites creativity in the classroom’, like a bright, burning flame lighting the path all while captivating those in its presence with mesmerizing awe. Sure, go ahead and attribute this to her majorly being an art teacher – creativity must come easily to them, right? – though, lo and behold, I personally credit this to her character; she’s funny, she’s kind, she’s very helpful (most important in a teacher!), and she’s inspiring, though the list could go on and on and on… Much like this nomination is bound to, heh. Oh, how much easier it would be if your team could accept right off the bat that Mrs. Blackwell is, hands down, one of the most awesome and approachable teachers in the realm of teaching. I mean, try pairing creativity with a teacher whose ‘weather mood’ was always set to overcast! Good luck to them, in trying to ignite their classroom the way Mrs. Blackwell so effortlessly does? What makes her so unique, then, as a candidate for nomination for this award, as I can’t single her out as the only awesome teacher in this world? Ah, how about the fact that she finds ways to showcase her creativity and enthusiasm, as well as invoke such in her students … in an online setting?? That’s right; we’re all part of an Internet-based high school over here – the wonderful, aforementioned Arizona Virtual Academy, or the high school division of it, anyhow – and are quite literally spread across the entire state, interconnected by our blessed Internet connections~ Yet, and needless to say, this form of schooling presents an unusual challenge between teacher and student: the lack of that daily, face-to-face interaction. It’s far too easy in such an online environment for students to start feeling ‘alienated’ or disconnected. Or, you know, that the being on the other side of the computer claiming to be their teacher is either a) an alien or b) doesn’t really exist. Let me enforce, then, that such is the exact opposite of Mrs. Blackwell’s students, from what I’ve seen (and personally experienced, being her student myself!). Every single day that she hosts a live, online, synchronous class session, I promise you, students log-in brimming with excitement to know what we’ll be doing in class that day. As her student, I know this has included but are not limited to breathtaking on-screen demonstrations, online games we play to review key lesson concepts (Kahoot or Cash Cab, anyone?), and watching her famous trailers she plays before the official start of class. The latter most, I think, is perhaps where her unfettered creativity shines through the most. The lovely, lovely trailers, which exhibit class announcements and are presented in the most interesting – and dare I say cute? – ways possible~ For instance, as a mock news-show or movie introduction; my two personal favorites. They’re all complete with sound, visuals, and optimum joint entertainment and information, and will quite frankly overpower any mere bullet-ed list of announcements with sheer awesomeness. Besides, her trailers are where she seems to utilize her Powtoon wizardry the most, which makes ’em that much better, right? Besides, her trailers are where she seems to utilize her Powtoon wizardry the most, which makes ’em that much better, right? She easily accomplishes that rare feat of making learning fun, and I’m sure that’s what 95% of students say about great teachers, yet it’s absolutely true in Mrs. Blackwell’s case. That, I believe, is the ultimate goal of combining learning with creativity: to make it so fun, captivating, rewarding, and personally important to both students and teachers alike that we literally rave about what we did in class at the dinner table. Heheh… I, for one, confess to that last part there. I can’t help it, though! Not with a teacher as creatively unique and wonderful as Mrs. Blackwell, who inspires a love of unique learning. I do believe that concludes this nomination, then! I most certainly hope you heavily consider Mrs. Blackwell of the Arizona Virtual Academy as a worthy recipient for a 2015 Powtoon CREATIVITY award. Sincerely, Sarah R. Negovan, Student and Digital Arts I Peer Tutor (taught by none other than Mrs. Blackwell herself) at the Arizona Virtual Academy”

A HUGE congratulations to our three winners! Here are just a few more things people are saying about their awesome teachers:

” Dianna Rogers is the most creative teacher because she does funny activities. We take selfies, we go to the mall in order to learn more vocabulary and in that way learning English is more interesting and I don’t get bored.”

“Miss Mariana Jimenez is the most creative teacher I ever had because her math class is very interactive, and even though I don?t like math because I found it difficult she always finds a way to make it easier and not boring, also she explains very good. Also she makes activities for us to understand it better.”

“My name is Shayla Lopez. I think the most creative teacher in my school is Mr. Mark Beckett. “This teacher is creative because he understands the importance of his students mind. I say this because Mr. Beckett makes sure he always allows us to create our own performances, our own song writing , our own everything mostly. He makes sure he provides us with enough tools and resources at all times in order for us to bring out our creative minds.

Congratulations again to all of the amazing teachers out there! We thank you for truly embodying awesomeness, and igniting creativity in your students!

Animated Video Inspires Strong Positive Emotions and Connects those Emotions with Your Business Message:

Most buying decisions are strongly rooted in the emotional experience an online brand inspires. It’s not just about the facts and figures.

Although, as we’ll explore shortly, telling your business story effectively with strong, easy to understand infographic data is also extremely important.

Visual content designed to bring out strong bursts of excitement and/or delight are 200% more effective than the usual text-only sales or blog copy.

It turns out that great animated video content, including: animated explainer, “How to…” and video infographics, are particularly effective for both inspiring positive emotions and for communicating your business “value-story” through data.

Animated video content empowers you to easily communicate your business message through visually combing powerful emotional and informational content through the use of:

  • Fun and emotionally expressive animated characters;
  • Strong, emotionally expressive colors;
  • Easy to understand and deeply engaging charts,
  • Animated text display and transition effects; and,
  • Really cool infographics
  • And Powtoon puts all of these tools right at your fingertips!

Ok, so now you know why video is critical to your online marketing success. You’ve also learned a few general tips for creating great video content.

You’ve also seen that using powerful video animation elements in your digital marketing content will give you serious competitive advantage over competing businesses. This increased engagement comes from effectively inspiring strong positive emotions while at the same time communicating and energizing your business message.

So now that you know why video is so critical to the success of your digital marketing campaign in 2015, let’s explore some of the most effective tools, tips, and techniques for producing your own animated videos:

The Top 8 Tips for Creating Amazing Animated Video Content:

So what are the 3 biggest challenges you face if you want to frequently create and share great animated video content from scratch?

Simple: It’s usually incredibly –

  • Expensive,
  • Extremely technical; and
  • Extraordinarily time-consuming.

Outsourcing the production of animated explainer, “how to” and demonstration videos can cost a fortune, – literally hundreds and very often thousands of dollars each!

And that’s right where my first high-value video creation tip comes in to play:

1. Make Your Animated Videos with The Powtoon Platform (It’s Free!)

Powtoon is the #1 free animated video and slide presentation creation tool for 2015 – period.

Powtoon empowers you to frequently craft and share rich visual content on your blog and social media accounts.

With Powtoon you can you significantly increase your chances of getting more views, stronger social signals and more real paying customers.

Powtoon makes creating great animated video content fast, fun and easy. And what’s really great is that you can start making and sharing videos right now – and it’s FREE !

2. How to Tell Your Business Story in 7 Simple Steps:

When you’re making an explainer or teaching video with The Powtoon platform make sure to start by creating a short written script that:

  • Tells your story through the experience of a main character. This allows your ideal customer (external or internal) to really connect in the first person. The Powtoon platform has so many characters and time-saving, theme-based templates for you to choose from.
  • Next, clearly and simply state your ideal customer’s top 1-3 pain points. For example, what real-world problems or business challenges will you solve with the information you’re going to share next? How will what you’re teaching them in your video directly benefit them in real life?
  • Next clearly explain or communicate your top tips, tools or strategies for solving your ideal customers’ main problems or pain points.
  • Give them your best action steps and strategies for free every time. These are things your viewers and followers can start doing right now to create genuine and immediate value in their lives.
  • Treat your viewers like high paying customers and that’s what they’re more likely to become!
  • Describe the solution state: Simply and clearly describe what it’s like for your main character now that he or she has implemented the solution or strategy you’ve outlined in your video. You want to clearly convey what it looks like and feels like now that they’ve started implementing your tips or suggestions. Don’t forget to use language, characters and images that inspire those positive emotions we discussed!
  • Finally, clearly state your call to action. This is where you invite your viewers to take a specific action step that further connects them with your business.

For example, many successful digital marketing campaigns offer additional high-value tips and strategies via an animated video series, a free Ebook or white paper, in exchange for a viewer’s email address.

You can then send them the free Ebook and at the same time add their email to your growing email marketing list.

You can then send them fresh, high-quality video marketing content which has a much higher ROI then the usual text and static image based email marketing copy by the way.

Quick Tip: Put an explainer video at the top of your blog or business website. Just like you notice a headline when it’s at the top of an online article or newspaper, you want to put the video where it immediately catches people’s attention.

3. Write an Attention-Grabbing Video Title Based on Fast Keyword Research

When it comes to optimizing your content for the search engines and generating high levels of follower engagement, keyword research for your video titles is incredibly important. So is writing an emotionally inspiring title for each new video once you’ve selected your keywords.

But how do you do effective keyword research? Now that both Google and YouTube no longer offer their free keyword research tools?

That’s easy! Try: Ubersuggest an amazing free tool that lets you do quick and effective keyword research.

Just type in your keywords and the tool will generate several suggestions based on what people are actually searching for right now in your business or personal branding niche.

Buzzsumo is another powerful free tool you can use to see what content and content titles are receiving the highest number of social shares and engagement.

Buzzsumo is great for curating and integrating the hottest online content for your niche and for brainstorming your own unique video and blog title ideas.

Once you have a good idea of what your next animated video or Powtoon slideshow is going to be about, it’s time to write an emotionally magnetic title that will actually grab and hold peoples’ attention.

You need to check out Coschedule’s amazing new headline analyzer tool. And it’s completely free!

Just type in your rough video title idea. The app then analyses and grades your title. For example, the title of this blog post scored an A+ after I made a few changes based on the app’s suggestions.

The Coshedule title tuning app provides easy to understand feedback and suggestions you can follow to make your titles more emotionally appealing, stickier and ultimately: more socially shareable.

Keep typing in each new title refinement you come up with based on the feedback you get until your title scores an A+ as well.

And remember: A shorter title is a much more effective title.

4. Keep Your Videos Short

One of the most important tips for video content creation is to keep the length of your videos at or around 60-90 seconds maximum. That’s the optimal length for keeping the average viewer’s sustained attention on YouTube.

There’s always an exception to the rule. Some “How to..” videos or business presentations can be longer. Just be sure to keep your longer videos super-fresh and super-valuable.

So how do you keep most of your animated videos short and to the point?

5. Use an Audio Story Board to Save Time and Hundreds of Dollars

One of the main reasons hiring a company to create animated videos is so expensive is that they actually draw up an animated storyboard for each video from scratch. That can take several dozens of hours of work on the part of a professional animator or team of animators.

So what’s the solution? Simple: when creating your animated video content with Powtoon use your audio voice over as a kind of audio storyboard to construct your video around.

How do you start?

Well, first you need to write your script for the video based on the basic storytelling principles we talked about earlier in step 2. Remember to keep it short (usually around 200 words) because you want your video to be no more than 90 seconds long in most cases.

You can then do your own “voiceover” by reading and recording your 60-90 second script.

You can also hire one of the amazing and surprisingly affordable voiceover artists Powtoon recommends via VoiceBunny or Fiverr.com.

Once you have a 60-90 second voiceover of your written script recorded, just downloaded it directly to your new Powtoon video as an audio file and select the background music of your choice.

You can then use the voiceover you’ve recorded to create your new animated video frame by frame! You can actually add great animated video characters, graphics and whiteboard-style text and other effects.

Oh and don’t worry! Powtoon walks you through a fun and fast set of short animated tutorials right from square one. You’ll honestly become a Powtoon video creation expert in no time!

6. Tell Your Business Story with Infographics

Infographics are arguably the most powerful way to visually communicate bottom-line business value.

Not only that: but Infographics are among the most shared form of content on social media next to great videos. That makes combining the incredible power of animated video with infographics a complete no-brainer!

How do you add infographics to your Powtoon videos and Slide Presentations?

Powtoon offers some great animated video infographic templates. This lets you build your own infographics as part of your animated video or slide presentation process from scratch.

You can also create amazing infographics using powerful, free data visualization tools like:

Once you’ve created your infographics you can save them and download them as images directly into your animated video or Powtoon slideshow.

Quick Tip: The best place to add your infographic content is when you get to the part of your audio script where you outline the key business and personal benefits of the strategy, tips or tools you’re suggesting in your video.

7. Unleash the Incredible Organic SEO Value of YouTube

Once you’ve finished creating each great new animated video, you want to share it across all of your most important social media channels.

When it comes to video content marketing, posting your videos to YouTube is the first place to start.

Why? Because YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google, and of course it’s actually owned by Google. Not only that, but the Google search engine ranks YouTube as a high authority website.

So, when you post a live link to your blog, website or landing page directly at the beginning of your YouTube video description, you’re actually creating a very powerful backlink for your blog or website. This is a little known yet very powerful organic SEO strategy you need to be taking advantage of as often as possible.

Powtoon makes downloading each new animated video you create to your YouTube channel fast and easy. And you can download to YouTube right from your Powtoon dashboard.

Once your new video goes live on YouTube, it’s as simple as clicking the social share buttons under your video and sharing them across all of your most important social media accounts!

8. Simple but Powerful On Page SEO Tips for YouTube:

  • Always fill out your Title, Description and Tags Sections Under the Video Before Publishing
  • Make Sure That Your Main Keywords are at the Front of Your Title and at the Beginning of Your Video’s Description
  • Place a Live Link to Your Blog, Website or Landing Page Right at The Front of Your Video Description
  • Make Sure to Write a Great Video Description of the Value It Offers Your Viewers in the Video Description Section. Tip: Use Your Written Video Script as the Basis for Your YouTube Video Description.
  • Think of Your Video Description as a Kind of Mini Blog Post. Videos with a few hundred words of description outperform similar videos with a very small or poorly written description.
  • Add 4 or 5 of Your Most Important and Relevant Keywords to The Tags Section of Your New Video Page.

Important Take Aways:

Ok! So now that you know having great animated video is:

  • 53X more likely to get you on the first page of a Google Search, and that it gets:
  • 12X more shares than text and links combined!
  • Visitors stay a full 2 minutes on a site with a video as opposed to just 8 seconds without great video; that:
  • 70% of people have very strong recall for audiovisual information after 3 days compared to just articles or text! and, most importantly:
  • Great Video has been shown to improve ROI up to 300%

So what’s your next best step?

Sign up now for your Free Powtoon Account! In just a few minutes you’ll be making animated marketing and explainer videos that people will love to watch and share! It’s really fun, it’s really easy and it’s really good for business!

Despite the Internet being around for 20+ years, the digital marketing sphere is still relatively new to companies. Many are unaware of the impact it can have on their business and are therefore unclear about the potential return on investment (ROI). These same companies often invest up to 60 percent of their marketing budget in television advertising despite only seeing an 18 percent ROI. In the meantime, forward thinking brands like Cadbury are reporting that their?digital marketing efforts are seeing an ROI that is four times higher than traditional ads despite investing less money. The best part is that even small businesses can take advantage of the digital marketing sphere as it is?incredibly affordable.

What is Digital Marketing?

Are banner ads the first things that pop into your mind when you think about digital marketing? While it is certainly a component, digital marketing covers a much broader spectrum than just ads. It also includes:

  • Blogs
  • Email marketing
  • Social media
  • Website SEO
  • Mobile marketing

The important point here is that a well laid digital marketing strategy integrates all of the different aspects together into one seamless experience. This provides much better brand recognition across ALL channels.

Why Use Digital Marketing?

It’s no exaggeration that the world is becoming increasingly digital. People are spending more time connected to the Internet than ever before thanks to mobile technology , and this trend is only expected to continue.

Besides staying relevant there are plenty of other reasons you should focus your attention on digital marketing efforts.

It’s cheaper ? If you want to reach the biggest audience on TV or newspapers, you need to spend several thousand dollars for the cheaper spots. Email marketing, or using paid social ads, can reach almost the same amount of people for only a fraction of the cost.

It’s better targeted ?Traditional ads gives you a certain level of control over who you market to, but it is nowhere near as powerful as digital. Depending on what online medium you use, you can find and reach your ideal audience right down to their implicit interests and psychographics. Since you’ll be reaching only the people who are interested in your business, you’ll see a much higher ROI.

It’s easier to track results ? Thanks to a wide range of different analytics tools you can easily see exactly where you are getting most of your traffic, whether it’s through your paid ads, social referrals, organic search or emails. While there, you can collect this data for traditional marketing campaigns, and digital allows you to track everything in real-time, giving you the opportunity to make necessary changes immediately. Ultimately, digital marketing gives you more up-to-date and relevant information to improve the performance of your campaigns.

How to Use Digital Marketing to Improve ROI

If you’re new to the digital landscape, all the different marketing options can be daunting and time consuming. After all, the digital world has transformed the world of marketing where communication is now a two-way

street and consumers can choose not to listen. Before, it was much easier to capture an audience’s attention with a flashy commercial or appealing photo spread. While visuals are still a powerful tool, consumers do not

want their Internet experience interrupted with advertisements. Instead, successful digital marketing concentrates on building relationships by:

Providing quality content ? Content marketing has become the Holy Grail of digital marketing and for good reason. When done well, it adds value to the customer’s experience and positions your company as an expert in your particular niche. The more useful your content, the more likely people will be to share your site with friends and family. Considering that 90 percent of consumers trust recommendations from personal acquaintances, these social recommendations can go a long way in conversions.

Knowing your customer ? In order to deliver the best content on all different digital fronts, you need to know your customer. It’s a good idea to create an ideal buyer persona and then follow them around the Internet. Where do they go to get information? Who do they look up to? Do they prefer visual or written content? These questions can help you pinpoint where and how you reach out to your customers as well as mold the type of content your create.

Creating goals ? You should know what you want to accomplish with your digital marketing strategy before you start. Depending on what you want ? ROI, conversions, brand visibility, engagement ? your strategy and tone will change.

Implementing Digital Marketing

If you’re looking to implement digital marketing, it doesn’t mean you should separate digital media from traditional. In fact, the best approach is to fully integrate the two so your audience will have the same experience

whether they are online or offline. If you want the best ROI, you need to approach your marketing campaign as a way to start a conversation with your audience.

Stage fright and performance anxiety are perfectly normal phenomenons that occur in most people (to some varying degree). It can manifest as anxious jitters before a big performance, or, for some people, it can be so debilitating that it actually prevents you from public speaking, performing, presenting, and so on. We know stage fright can hit some people very hard, but we have some great tips on how to overcome performance anxiety that will help you get back out into the public eye (without the physical and emotional consequences of anxiety).

First of all it is important to understand what performance anxiety is, because it is very hard to overcome something that you don’t fully understand. Anxiety, in general, usually consists of excessive worry accompanied by either motor tension or restlessness (as outlined by Kaplan and Saddock’s introduction to psychiatry). By the way this is a book that every medical and psychology doctoral student has to read and learn, so I’d take their word that they know what they are talking about. In performance anxiety in particular, this worry takes your focus off of your presentation, speech, or whatever else you need to do in front of an audience, and drives your attention instead to your fears and worries. You are now no longer interested in how you are going to communicate your message, you are only interested in the fact that you are really scared of that communication, which only further exacerbates the anxiety.

So how can one overcome this? What are some tools for kicking anxiety’s butt?

Breathe and Relax Your Body

This may seem like an obvious piece of advice, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t know how to breathe correctly (in terms of breathing to achieve relaxation), and how many people just can’t sit still and relax. Mastering your breathing is an extremely powerful tool that can dramatically improve your quality of life (especially if you are an anxious person), but unless you are a professional singer, you might not be aware of how to breathe correctly to calm yourself down. Breathing to calm yourself must come from the diaphragm, and here is a great explanation from Dr. Alan Mandell on why breathing is important and how to breathe properly. I’d recommend watching all 3.5 minutes because this guy knows what he’s talking about!

Once you have mastered the art of breathing properly, which should cause you to feel more calm, you can take it one step further and do stretches and exercises to relax your whole body. Yoga is a great way to get rid of that extra bit of nervousness, and it leaves your body feeling amazingly refreshed afterwards. Doing yoga, or meditating, the night before a big presentation, or even the day of if time allows, could really help you get ready to go without the extra jitters clouding your experience.

Don’t Fight Your Stage Fright… Work With It!

This might seem a bit strange to those people who have debilitating anxiety, but if you don’t try to suppress it (which almost never works and ends up putting more of your attention and focus on your fear and anxiety), and, instead, you try to use it to your advantage, you could actually become successful in overcoming it. So how does one do this? Overcoming anxiety this way is rooted in a deep understanding of anxiety. You have to be aware that you have issues and problems in front of an audience, and then do what you can to make yourself feel that it doesn’t matter. One way people do this is to over prepare whatever it is that you are presenting. Regardless of your anxiety, if you feel like you are an expert at what you’re talking about you will start to focus less on your nervousness and more on your content and materials, not to mention that you will feel very comfortable with what you are speaking about, performing, or presenting. You’ll still have the anxiety, but you at least won’t be enhancing it by not feeling 120% prepared. When you feel like an expert, you can do anything! Don’t think it will work for you? Try it the next time you have to speak in front of a crowed and you might be surprised by how effective this method is.

Arrive Early

A common theme when dealing with anxiety is not to get rid of the anxiety, which is highly implausible, but to try to minimize your chances of exacerbating your anxiety. Even non anxious people can go crazy when they are late to important things, so don’t add that to your already heightened fear of performing and speaking in public. Arrive early, give yourself time to acclimate to your surroundings, get comfortable in the environment you will be performing in, and then take the remaining time to focus on your breathing and calming exercises. When you are at your venue try to only practice once or twice or you run the risk of exciting yourself to the point of agitating your fears and worries. Really use the time before your presentation to calm yourself down and BREATHE!

Practice as Much as Possible (before the big day)

There is nothing that could stop anxiety clear in her gripping tracks like feeling prepared. Again, it won’t eradicate the problem, but it also won’t enhance it and will make you feel more calm. Practice as much as you can before the day of your speech, performance, public speaking engagement, etc. Really know your stuff inside and out and use the practices to build your confidence. A large reason anxiety is so powerful is because people are genuinely lacking self confidence. Practice in front of family, friends, and loved ones,? and don’t shy away from their constructive criticism. These people care about you and want you to succeed, so listen to what they have to say because it will help you improve your performance. Once you’ve got it just right be confident in the fact that you know what you’re saying, and understand that you are just human and humans make mistakes. They happen… They suck but they happen, and if you are comfortable with that fact you won’t focus on a fear of messing up (which will, in the end, actually minimize the mistakes you make anyways).

Learn to Improvise

This is perhaps the best piece of advice for anyone who suffers from any degree of anxiety. Most anxiety stems from focusing on situations you think will happen, but let me tell you this… LIFE IS UNPREDICTABLE, and if you learn how to go with the flow, your anxiety will becoming less of a focus. So what if you forget a line? You can make up a new line. So what if you hit a wrong note? You are human and people know that no one is perfect. Plus they don’t care. You care, but your audience is usually just interested in seeing you or hearing what you have to say. If you lessen this fear of making mistakes and messing up, you are one step closer to getting over the fear itself. And if you aren’t still convinced then, when appropriate, include your audience in your anxiety. Tell them in the beginning you are a bit nervous, and you will feel an instant calm. If you preface your performance (when appropriate) with the fact that you are nervous two things can happen. 1) if you happen to mess up your audience will know it is because of nerves and will forgive you, or 2) you will have calmed yourself down enough that you will give a knock out, stellar performance, and then everyone will leave satisfied and you will feel like a winner. Whatever you have to do know that there are ways to overcome this dreaded anxiety.

Now that we have taught you some great tricks for overcoming stage fright (and anxiety in general), why don’t you create a presentation on something you love and are passionate about, and present it to your family and friends. Take the first step in getting your message out there without fear holding you back!

Introduction – Who This Guide is For

Before you read anything else, I have to tell you that I do NOT work for Powtoon. Yes, they feature my videos and recommend me as a Powtoonist, but I do not pay for that privilege, nor do they pay me to endorse them.

I’m simply a guy who needed an animated video production tool and prefer Powtoon. They happened to like what I did with the software so that’s how I ended up with my videos and a link to my services on their site. Now back to our regular programming…

This guide is meant to help entrepreneurs with small to medium-sized businesses, especially people like me who are solo-preneurs, who like working under the hood and getting their hands dirty. This guide will help you get a quick head start on using Powtoon to create videos. But not just the generic DIY-looking Powtoon videos.

I’ve spent a lot of time creating Powtoons for myself and clients around the world and I’ve learned a few hacks and tricks that have helped me create what I call “Powtoons with Pow!”

In other words, this guide will help you make professional looking videos that look like they cost a pretty penny.

Why I Wrote This Guide (aka Why am I telling other people how to do it?)

Two reasons:

First, I’ve been creating free content since 2009 when I started making presentation tips videos. In fact, I owe everything I’m doing now to those videos, to the idea that giving away good value brings value back in return. Financially yes, but even more so the relationships and friendships that were created along the way. So I hope that by sharing these Powtoon tips with you, you will be able to create value for others and build your own relationships.

Second, I also learned that as an entrepreneur I can’t do it all. I’ve tried. I still try. I’m sure you’re in the same boat. But I’ve learned there are times when I need to rely on someone else. So perhaps down the road when you are looking for someone to help with your videos, you’ll think of me.

How to Use this Guide

This guide was written following my own workflow when creating videos. So you can follow each chapter and use it as a sequence of steps. First, I suggest going through each chapter and then using this guide as a checklist for when you make your own videos. As a bonus, I’ve included a Powtoon video production checklist at the end to help you out. (Don’t get too excited, it’s just the chapter rehashed into a list).

A BIG Secret to Tell You Before You Get Into the Guide

Now that you know who this guide is for, why I wrote it and how to use it, I want to share with you the big secret that has helped me create videos my clients are crazy about…

A video is just a presentation!

So above all else, remember that your video needs to focus on your audience, the message must be clear, it has to get and keep the audience’s attention and it must provide a clear call-to-action.

And now that you’re up to speed, let’s go!

Tip #1: Expectations – What Powtoon Is and What Powtoon Isn’t

A lot of people see fully animated explainer videos online and love them. Then those same people hope to get one of those videos made using Powtoon and are soon disappointed.

Yes, Powtoon can make some awesome videos, but you need to be realistic about your expectations so the following list of what Powtoon is and isn’t will help you understand what Powtoon can and can’t do, which is still a lot.

* Powtoon IS a simple to use animated video creation tool.

* Powtoon IS empowered with features and abilities to produce professional results that look like you spent thousands of dollars.

* Powtoon IS affordable and a great way to market your business using video.

* Powtoon IS, in my opinion, the fastest and easiest way to make animated videos.

* Powtoon ISN’T a full-featured animation tool like Adobe After Effects, meaning you can’t use Powtoon to make fully animated, cartoon-like videos that normally cost thousands of dollars per minute.

* Powtoon ISN’T an app you can use offline or on a mobile device. This means you have to use Powtoon while connected to the Internet.

* Powtoon ISN’T able to export a copy of your video so you can edit it with another Powtoon account or any other animation software.

* Powtoon ISN’T bug-free but it’s run by a group of people who really do care and are constantly working to improve it.

Tip #2: Script Writing Essentials

Script

Before you do anything in Powtoon, you need to have a script to work from. The script is your sales and/or marketing copy so it’s critical to have this ready before you create your video.

The script is also what your voice actor will read from. Even if you decide not to get a voiceover, you’ll still want to keep your script conversational and avoid any unnecessary jargon or long, complicated sentences.

Make sure you put your audience, your target market, first. Who is your target market? What is their problem, pain or challenge? How do you solve their problem, relieve their pain or help them overcome their challenge?

Tip #3: How Long Should My Powtoon Be?

length

Once you have the outline of your script, you can now edit it to get to the length you want for your video.

As a rough guide, a one minute video will have about 170 words. Ideally, your video should not be more than three minutes long. A minute and a half to two minutes is ideal.

If you have more to say, consider making separate videos to make a series. Also, nothing bores people more than long videos about your business unless you’re giving amazing value.

Tip #4: To Voice or Not to Voice?

voiceover

Voice! Always. A voiceover will give your video life and personality.

A voiceover over also gives your target market a sense of who you are, a feeling about whether you’re the type of people they want to do business with.

You can easily find voice actors for a reasonable cost on Fiverr.com. Usually, they charge $5 per minute or up to 100 words. Shop around as some are pricier, better, more reliable or good value.

For $5, you can afford to experiment.

Get an mp3 file in 320kbps to ensure quality audio and easy uploading to Powtoon. Powtoon only works with mp3 files.

Get a wav file if you plan to edit the audio further or want to archive an original copy of your voiceover. You can do the voiceover yourself but make sure you’re using a good microphone, are in a quiet, non-echoey room and

can sound enthusiastic and passionate. I do my own voiceovers because I work as a professional voice actor. Also because I have professional equipment and people know that I am my brand. Once imported into your

Powtoon, set the voiceover volume high enough so that you can hear it clearly when your speakers are turned up halfway.

Tip #5: Storyboard – Why & Basic Tips

storyboard

You need to have a storyboard when you make a Powtoon because the storyboard acts as your video’s visual outline. It’s possible to make a video without a storyboard but it’s easier to make changes to a storyboard than to

a video that already has the timing, animations, transitions and everything set up. I create my storyboards in Powtoon because once the storyboard is finalized, it’s easy to upload my voiceover file, adjust the timing for

each scene and get the video completed. If you create the storyboard on paper or in another app, you will need to duplicate it in Powtoon. So why not save time and do the storyboard directly in Powtoon, right? When

putting together your storyboard in Powtoon, make each scene about 5-7 seconds long. This will give you plenty of time to make adjustments in the final video. This also makes it possible to have 3-5 scenes on one slide.

And finally, include the images, animations and transitions you intend to use, as well as the timing for when each element of your scene comes onto the screen. This will save you tons of time because you won’t have to do

all that after your storyboard is finished. This also helps you see what your completed video will look like and how things will work together.

Tip #6: Size Matters – Creating Emotion with Size

An easy way to give emotion to your Powtoon video is to make things bigger when you want to show more emotion. You’ll often see this technique in movies when the director wants the audience to better experience what

a character is feeling. So if you want to show that your character is upset, you’ll get a much more powerful effect by zooming in on their face. This works with any of the Powtoon characters and all you have to do is resize

the character until all you mostly see is their head.

size matters

But don’t make all your characters zoomed in because the audience will get used to seeing that perspective and you’ll lose the effect. So don’t overdo it but definitely use it.

Tip #7: Transitions, Animations & Positions – Smooth Moves Create Flow

If there’s any one thing that separates a professional looking Powtoon video from a not so professional looking one is how you use transitions, animations and positions of objects and characters on the screen.

transitions

For transitions between scenes try to make the exiting transition and entering transition match up. For example, if you make everything leave the scene by exiting to the right, then you’ll want to have the next scene enter

from the left. This will create a nice flow from one scene to the next. It’s also a good idea to leave about half a second to one second in between the transitions. So set your next scene to enter the shot about a half second or one second

after the previous scene has exited. This will give you a smooth looking transition from one scene to the next.

transitions 3transitions 2

And finally, the positioning of your objects should have a realistic perspective. What this means is that if you want something to look like it’s far away from the viewer, place it up higher on the screen. If you want something

to appear closer, place it lower on the screen. But also be sure to adjust the object’s size so that something far away is smaller and something close is bigger.

transitions 4

Tip #8: What’s Your Character? (aka Your Target Market)

Those awesome Powtoon people have given us a bevy of characters to choose from. There’s pretty much something for everyone and you may be tempted to mix and match characters.

My advice is to choose one set of characters for your video and stick with that set for that video. This helps create visual continuity and makes it easier for your audience to identify with the characters.

And that’s really key. The character set you choose should somewhat represent your target market. For example, if your target market is parents of young children, don’t use the corporate looking characters.

I realize that it’s a really obvious thing when you hear me say it, but I’ve seen plenty of videos where the mixing and matching just doesn’t give a professional look.

I will say, however, that if a character set represents a certain type of person that is a contrast to another character set, then go for it. For example, one character could be someone who has never used your product, and the

other character could be someone who has.

character

Tip #9: Images Rule – Why & Tips for Using Images

Images say a lot about your company, your brand and you. Images can be used as a background, to show your product or service, or they can be used to represent an idea or help make your message more clear.

And Powtoon makes it easy to add images to your videos. You can choose from the large selection of illustrations, which are fantastic and usually all you need. Or you can choose photos using Powtoon’s photo search

function. And finally, you can upload your own images, like your company logo.

images 1

The key thing to remember when uploading your own photos and illustrations is the size of your images. For the size, I recommend images to be at least 900 pixels wide. This will help the image maintain its quality even if you have to

make it bigger in the video. Images that are smaller tend to look pixelated and just plain crappy and unprofessional if they’re made bigger on screen.

images 2

Tip #10: Setting the Mood – Choosing Background Music

Background music is an essential part of your Powtoon video and Powtoon offers lots of great music for your project. Whatever you choose, set the volume with the slider control so the music isn’t too loud if you have a voiceover. The music should

complement, not overpower your voiceover. If you don’t have a voiceover, then set the music volume to max. Personally, I like using the Powtoon background music but I also want to have options. A great place to get free, copyright free music is

YouTube. Log into your YouTube account, click on your profile and select Creator Studio. On the lefthand side of the screen you’ll see a section at the bottom called Create. Clicking on Create will take you to YouTube’s Audio Library where you can choose

from hundreds of different audio tracks and sound effects.

mood 2setting the mood 1

You’ll also see that YouTube has free music and ad-supported music. Both types of music can be used for any type of project, but the ad-supported music has restrictions. The most common restriction is that you can’t monetize your video with YouTube advertising. The other restriction is

the song will be blocked in certain countries. My advice is to stick to the free music since you are making Powtoon videos for business purposes. I’m not a legal expert but it’s probably safer to not use copyrighted music in your video. Once you choose something, download it to your

computer and upload it to Powtoon. Easy.

Bonus Tip #1: Add an Extra Shot of Pow

Once I finish editing my video in Powtoon, I export the video file and do a bit of extra editing on my computer. This lets me add some finishing touches like a fade in and fade out effect. You can also use your video editor to add video to your Powtoon that you shot with a video camera, which is something I do quite often.

extra pow

Another thing I often do is add my background music in my video editor, instead of in Powtoon. And I do this because it lets me separately adjust the volume of my voiceover or background music. It also lets me easily change the background music without having to re-export my file from Powtoon.

Bonus Tip #2: Copy & Paste is Your Friend

After I finish with my storyboard and begin editing the video, there are a lot of times where I’ll want to fit a scene from, for example, the second slide into the first slide. Or I may have to move something from one slide to the next slide because it doesn’t fit due to timing.

An easy way to make this move is to select the thing I want to move, copy, then paste it. Just be sure to place the red timing arrow at the place you want your pasted object to appear.

And if there are a few objects in a scene that need to be moved, click on each object while holding down Command if you’re a Mac user, or Control if you’re on a PC. Once you’ve done that, click Copy to copy all of those objects at once. Then just paste them wherever you want them.

Just be sure to double check the animation effect of your pasted object or objects, because sometimes the effect can be changed after pasting.

In September 2014, Powtoon launched our mega back to school campaign, handing out $5 Million Dollars worth of FREE Powtoon accounts to teachers and educators across the globe. Our mission was to help educators empower their students with technology.

When Mr. Tellez heard about it, he made a decision that changed the lives of his students forever and changed the way we think at Powtoon.

Here is Mr. Tellez’s letter:

“Hello, Ilya,

I’m a volunteer rural teacher in Mexico for kids who live far away from the cities or don’t have the economic resources to go to a public school. It’s really difficult for kids in the same conditions in this country to receive any kind of education so they’re usually not interested at all in school as they just want to join their parents working in the fields or making craftwork.

I’ve been using Powtoon from a couple of years ago to teach kids of 10, 11, and 12 years old and they’re always fascinated during the classes and I definitely saw an improvement in their learning process since then. At the beginning of this year, the Mexican government sent us some computers and other technologies for teaching the kids and I couldn’t be more happy to find out about the giveaway program for teachers and students Powtoon is running! It’s been almost a week since I gave them their accounts and started teaching them how to use it and they learned so quickly, they’re getting more creative, more receptive, and more dynamic in each class. Their grades keep improving, right now I got the news that 34 of my 53 kids where eligible to compete with other students in our local Knowledge Olympics with kids from the city schools and I know they will become very successful people in the future.

just wanted to thank you and all the Powtoon team for improving so much the way these kids are being educated, their goals and their lives.

You guys are the best! Greetings from Mexico,

— Mr Tellez”

We are so excited that we could add a spark of awesomeness to Mr. Tellez’s classroom, and to classrooms across the world. It’s not just about technology, It’s much bigger, it’s about nurturing kids to be creative and grow up to be creative, confident thinkers.

PowerPoint has long been the reigning king of presentations, but as consumers continue to evolve, a series of slides just don’t always capture the interest of audiences anymore. Do you watch your employee’s or student’s eyes glaze over when you start a PowerPoint presentation? Are you stuck on how to effectively get their attention? Well, we have a solution for you!

Simply think about presenting as you would any other type of marketing strategy.

Get in the mind of your audience.

We live in a world where audiences are multi-taskers, clicking between multiple tabs, checking emails while on phone calls, and even texting during PowerPoint presentations! Learning how to be an engaging presenter, or using catchy text and graphics, will only go so far. Eventually the phone buzzes, a colleague calls, or someone comes upon a cool article on the web, and then your audience’s attention is zapped, and you’ve as good as lost them…

So how do you keep them hooked? Presentation experts in the Oral Presentation Center at Hamilton College (http://www.hamilton.edu/oralcommunication/how-to-engage-your-audience-and-keep-them-with-you) say the key to keeping your presentations engaging is by creating a presentation that is, first and foremost, focused, and uses relatable and interesting information rather than overflowing with boring facts and statistics.

Evolve the delivery of your content

The way you deliver your content should evolve like any good marketing strategy. You really need to look at the evolving marketing trends and use those methods to deliver your content with both creativity and innovation to your audience. Videos and animation are rising in popularity among marketers, and there is no better time than this to integrate them into your presentations, too.

Think about your typical PowerPoint

More or less, PowerPoint presentations consist of one slide after another, with a few graphics, fancy transitions, bullet points or statistics thrown in. However, this doesn’t match todays audiences’ wants and needs. Studies show that more consumers and audiences absorb information visually – through graphics or video – than by reading text. The PowerPoint presentations of yesterday relied on bullet points of text with a few graphics, however, as videos and animated graphics are rising in popularity online, use this trend as an advantage in your presentation campaign.

So how do I do it?

We’re not telling you to sprinkle your PowerPoints with memes, or replace PowerPoints with videos. We’re telling you to PowToon!!

Want to get in on an exclusive video marketing secret? Yes? We thought so! One of the absolute best ways to increase your video’s SEO is by building links to your YouTube page. It is fantastic that you have instituted online video in your marketing plan, and, hopefully, created a YouTube channel, but now it is time to take the next step in your quest to increase SEO.

Here are some great practices for building link equity for your videos

YouTube, SEO, Links to YouTube

Know How To Link

YouTube does not know how to 301 redirect, so you want to be sure to link to your dominant URL under the “youtube.com/user/username format. According to Reel SEO, this is so important that it boosted videos ranked in the #20-#35 range to the top 3 in only a matter of a few weeks! That’s HUGE! Reel SEO also explains that “unless you’re 301 redirecting multiple versions of your content to the original versions, search engines will treat the various versions of your content as unique entries”.

It makes sense! Link to the version YouTube uses because this is really the dominant link in search engine’s minds!

YouTube Says:

YouTube even chipped in their two sense on this issue in their Creator Playbook. While some insights, such as the tip that “likes” and “favorites” will increase your rankings, are obvious, others are specific to YouTube guidelines. YouTube advises that users remember the importance of metadata. Use tags to your advantage, and place relevant keywords at the front of your title, description, and tag fields. The key number for tags is at least 12, and don’t be afraid to get as close to the character limit as you can.

Create Playlists

Making playlists will not only make it easier for viewers to find your other videos, but it also improves your content in terms of YouTube’s ratings.

The Early Bird Gets The Worm

SlideShare reveals that YouTube favors comments that are published early, so respond quickly to posted comments to generate more responses.

Drive Your SEO

More is better in this case! Publish regularly on YouTube to improve your YouTube search algorithm rankings. Last, but not least, don’t forget to link to your other content as well as your website and social media channels so that search engines boost your rankings, and viewers know where to find you.
